Good Friday Prayer and Reflection in Historic Sanctuary of Tacoma’s First Presbyterian Church

Commemorate the last hours of Jesus on the Cross in the cathedral-like Sanctuary of Tacoma’s First Presbyterian Church on Good Friday from Noon-3:00 pm. In the midst of stained glass and candlelight, pause to pray, meditate, and reflect. Times of silence will alternate with readings and soft music, but most of the time will be spent in silence. Come for a few minutes or a couple of hours. This annual open house for prayer and reflection is a powerful time for renewal and self-analysis. Then come back later at 7:00 pm for our Good Friday communion service, which will feature the world premiere of a new Requiem written by Jesús Gomez.

GOOD FRIDAY REQUIEM & COMMUNION SERVICE

Friday, April 14th 7:00pm Sanctuary

This year’s Good Friday service will be a reflective evening of worship as we experience the premiere of Jesús Gomez’s Requiem. This powerful and beautiful work has been written for our Chancel Singers, Chancel Choir,  Chamber Orchestra, and Organ. Jesús, who has been our worship intern for two years, has graduated from PLU in choral conducting and is now teaching choral music at Glacier View Jr. High.

In the context of the this ancient liturgical form, we will receive communion together. Pastor Eric will share devotional thoughts and familiar passion hymns will also be sung.

Prepare for a thrilling Easter celebration by experiencing the rich musical heritage of a Requiem written for Good Friday.

A Prayer Story From Diana Farrell

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:20 ESV)

Praying with others has been one of the greatest blessings that God has given me. With each new person I pray with, I am able to find something that helps me to deepen my own prayer life.

I have one friend who begins each prayer by painting a picture of God’s throne room. She talks about kneeling in front of the throne. Every time I think of this image I am reminded of the sovereignty of our God. Another friend approaches prayer with joy and celebration, and I am reminded of how wonderful it is to spend time in the presence of our God and how amazing his works are. Another friend uses Psalms and other Bible verses in her prayers which makes me feel connected to the Saints of old and the promises of God, and yet another taught me to pray in the Jewish tradition, which roots me to God’s chosen people.

What an amazing thing to be able to learn from these wonderful prayer warriors; however, not only do we have the ability to learn how to pray from one another, but we also are granted the opportunity to build relationships with the people with whom we pray. Sincere prayer always shows the heart. It shows what we love, what we need, and what we fear. Therefore, by its very nature, praying with another is an act of intimacy. What an amazing gift and responsibility. We not only are now able to pray more effectively for that person, but they are now able to pray more effectively for us, and through this process a bond grows, and we become true sisters and brothers in Christ.

For those who are anxious about praying with another, may I just take a moment to encourage you to try it? God isn’t looking for the most eloquent of speakers; he is looking for the sincere heart. I love how children pray. They say what they mean, and they say it plainly. Are we not children, too? Trust God; he gave you this gift of praying with one another, and he will help you through the Holy Spirit.

Thanks be to God for encouraging us to pray with one another, and a sincere thank you to all of the wonderful people with whom I have had the privilege of praying.

New HS/MS Bible Study of Book of Daniel Starts April 2

On Sunday, April 2 we are starting a new Middle School/High School class—a Bible study of the book of Daniel! We will explore how Daniel became a leader for God in a culture that was hostile to the true God, and we will study the amazing prophesies in Daniel about the coming of the true Messiah and about the future of the world. We meet in the Gold Room on Sundays at 9:15 am. Led by John and Sonja West.

Books for Easter and Lent are in the Library!

Our books for Easter and Lent are now available for checking out. Each week before Easter some specific books will be highlighted on our display tables. We have books for both adults and for children.

Several of our children’s books help children learn the difference between a popular culture message of Easter (the Easter bunny, etc.) and the real meaning of Easter, which is Jesus’ death and resurrection for our sins. We also have free Easter coloring pages that kids can color at the library or take home to color later.

One highlight of our adult Easter books is  Jesus’ Seven Words, Our One Word by Pastor Martin Ives.

Make sure to stop by the library before or after the service to pick up some books! If you have any questions or want to locate a specific book you can also email us!
