thegospelssm

If you are in High School or Middle School, come to Sunday School this Fall and explore the story, the history, and the meaning of the Gospels at 9:15 am on Sunday mornings. This class is a great way to become better grounded in your faith. We will be using the new “Drive Thru History” DVD series The Gospels hosted by Dave Stotts, which was filmed in the actual locations where Jesus preached and performed his miracles. During the first half of each class, we will watch the DVD, and during the second half we will discuss what we’ve learned. Facilitators: John West, Sonja West, Gregg Leach. Location: Youth Room (Synder, Main Building). Adults are also welcome to attend, especially parents of teens! For more information, contact sonja@nutley.org. Class starts on September 18.

Can You Hear the Bells? Start of a New Bell Choir Year

It’s that time of year again! School is almost starting, Kick-Off Sunday is approaching, and our youth bell choirs begin soon!

This year we are planning to have both a Chapel Bell Choir and a Lindsey Bell Choir. Chapel Bells is a beginning bell choir for grades 5 – 8. Lindsey Bells is a more advanced choir for grades 9 and up. Musical experience is not necessary when joining either bell choir, though it can only help. Our Bell Choir Director, Daniel Heath, says that all you need is two hands and the ability to count to four.

Chapel Bells meet from  7-8 pm on Wednesday nights in Middleton Parlor (Room 109 on the church map).
Lindsey Bells meet from  6-7 pm on Wednesday nights also in Middleton Parlor.

Daniel Heath will be at the bell table in Stone Hall (aka Fellowship Hall) on Kickoff Sunday (September 11).  He will have information and sign up sheets for all who are interested.

He is also planning to be at the youth group kick-off potluck later that day to speak about the bell choir.

Our first day of bell choir practice this year is on  September 14.  We hope to see you there!

Any other questions that desperately need answering before September 11th? Contact Daniel Heath or Sonja West.

adultedbannersm.037

Join us on Sunday mornings this Fall from 9:15-10:15 am for one of our Adult Education classes that will take you deeper into the Christian faith and help you further develop a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ.

Living in Christ’s Presence (9/18-10/16)

In this 5-week DVD-based class, the late Dallas Willard (a Philosophy Professor at the University of Southern California and noted author of influential books on spiritual formation) and John Ortberg (Senior Pastor at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church) explore what it means to live well in light of God’s kingdom and His calling on our lives as His disciples. The class will revolve around DVD presentations by Dallas Willard and John Ortberg followed by discussion of the ideas that were presented. Facilitator: Matt Pickard. Location: Middleton Parlor, Main Building.

Prayer (9/18-10/16)

In his book Prayer, Tim Keller says that prayer is both a conversation and an encounter with God. J.I. Packer and Carolyn Nystrom title their book on prayer Finding our Way through Duty to Delight. When we make over our hearts to God in prayer, He is reshaping us and conforming us more and more to His own image, His own desire for us, and to our own deepest desire for ourselves: God with us. Join us as we explore prayer and experience the awe and intimacy of God which is ours through prayer; as we learn to listen for the still, small voice of God with the ear of our hearts; to talk with Him in the cool of the garden; and to encounter Him in the real day-by-day walk of our lives. Instructor: Annie Lockwood. Location: Gold Room, South Building.

The Fulfillment of an Old Promise: Paul’s Letter to the Romans, Chapters 9-11 (10/30-11/16)

In this third installment of his study of Paul’s letter to the Romans, internationally recognized Bible teacher and author Rev. Earl Palmer will explore Romans 9-11 and show how Christ fulfilled the promises God made to the Jewish people in the Old Testament. He will also explain how these chapters provide an important key for understanding the book as a whole.
