A Prayer Story From Debbie Hopen

During the summer of 2000, I was heading to St. Louis, and the airline was showing music videos as people were boarding the flight. As I took my seat, a new video started, and it had lovely music and was being song by an angelic voice. The images on the screen were disturbing and seemed to conflict with the beautiful sound, so I began to watch more intently. The song was One Voice by Billy Gilman, and that experience changed my prayer life.

Let me share the words of the song here.

There’s too much stuff that’s making her cry
We need some help
Down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard

A house, a yard, a neighborhood
Where you can ride your new bike to school
A kinda world where mom and dad
Still believe the golden rule
Life’s not that simple
Down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard

One voice
One simple word
Hearts know what to say
One dream can change the world
Keep believing till you find your way

Yesterday while walking home
I saw some kid on Newbury Road
He pulled a pistol from his bag
And tossed it in the river below

Thanks for the help down here on earth
A thousand prayers, a million words
But one voice was heard
One voice was heard
One voice was heard

I had what I thought was a rich prayer life prior to that day. I prayed regularly and had deep, relational conversations with God. I willingly joined into corporate prayers during church services and in small groups. I made a point to include prayer requests in my daily prayers, and I carefully practiced praising God, offering Thanksgiving, and confessing my sins to cleanse my heart before I prayed for the Lord’s interventions. I had faith that he would answer those prayers in his own time, and I learned to be patient and to search for his answers even when they were not immediately apparent to me.

But there was one thing that really had not caught my attention. Other than planned corporate prayer in Christian group settings, I was a solo prayer. I knew Marine View, where I was attending church at the time, had a prayer chain, and I was grateful that I could submit requests for their prayerful support. Until I heard this song, however, I never actually realized how God values persistence and the accumulation of prayers and what a wonderful ministry the prayer chain is.

Now, it’s 16 years later, and I’ve moved to FPTC. I joined the prayer chain almost immediately, and I am spiritually uplifted every day as I join with its other members to pray for members of our congregation, their families and friends, and even people from far away who none of us here will ever meet face-to-face. I don’t even know everyone on our prayer chain, but I do know—with absolute confidence—that God hears and is moved by our one voice.

Correction Notice

Late last week we became aware of an issue related to our blog postings for the 40-Day Prayer Challenge. Basically, most people at FPTC are using a printed copy of the book, Love to Pray by Alvin VanderGriend. Dr. VanderGriend was kind enough to provide us with an electronic version of the book that could be used on a computer screen by those of us who are vision impaired and need a larger font size—including the person coordinating this blog!

Unfortunately, we now know that these two versions of the book are not identical. The scriptural passages and text for each devotion do match exactly, but the order of the chapters differs for some weeks. For Weeks 1 and 2, both versions of the book covered the same contents. That was not the case for Week 3, however. Last week’s blog reminder for the devotions to be studied and the links to multiple versions of the scriptural text reflected the electronic version of the book. We apologize to all of you who are using the printed version of the book and were confused by this information.

In order to get all of us who are following the 40-Day Prayer Challenge, we are posting the information for Week 3 for both the printed and electronic versions of the book today. We will post both versions for Week 4 tomorrow. We hope this will give you an opportunity to get back into the sequence that matches the version of the book you are using. Thanks for your understanding.
